Meg Medina is one of our favorite Latino authors, and we’ve been a big fan of her newest children’s book, Mango, Abuela and Me ever since it debuted last fall.

So we’re psyched to celebrate her big win this month, as Mango, Abuela and Me took home the 2016 Pura Belpré Honor Book Medal for Literature at the American Library Association Awards.

This is the 20th anniversary of the Pura Belpré award; for the past two decades it has shone a spotlight on books celebrating Latino culture in children’s literature.

On Goodreads, Medina commented on her experience winning this prestigious diversity award, writing, “In so many ways, this has become my life’s work. To have this medal on my book – this year in particular – is such an affirmation.”

A big hug to Kate Fletcher, my editor, and to all my friends at Candlewick who make me feel like a winner every single day. (Special kudos to designer Heather McGee and Ann Stott who art directed along with Chris Paul.) Much appreciation, too, goes to my agent, Jen Rofé, for her friendship and tireless advocacy on my behalf.

But mostly, I’m grateful to everyone who has read and shared Mango, Abuela and Me. Thank you for using this book to help children feel proud of who they are and to help us all celebrate the many ways to speak the language of love and respect.

Mango, Abuela and Me is a sweet and moving story that explores the experience of thousands of American Latinos, and teaches children to embrace their heritage through deeper exploration and a sense of curiosity and excitement. It’s a great choice for young children who want to learn more about latino culture and heritage, whether they’re latino or not.

All we have to say is this: Congratulations, Meg! We’re so happy to see Mango, Abuela and Me get the recognition it deserves!

About the author:

As Latin é's Editor-in-Chief, Caitlin believes in quality over quantity, doing things right the first time, and humming to herself during difficult tasks. A true Texan at heart, she also believes in the power of cowboy boots, that the stars at night should always be big and bright, and that everything (especially the food) is bigger in Texas. When she's not writing or editing she enjoys curling up to read a good book (or three), going on grand adventures (the more walking involved, the better) with her adoring and adorable husband, bright colors (in clothes, cooking, and everything else), and going barefoot. She likes her food spicy, her music soulful, and her news breaking. You can read more of her work on her website, www.themathom-house.com!
